WHO:
East Tennessee leaders including Chattanooga Mayor Gene Roberts, will take
part in the summit
along with national and regional leaders, including Energy Secretary Hazel
O'Leary, former White House
Chief of Staff Howard Baker, Nobel Prize winner Dr. Clifford Shull, Tennessee
Gov. Don Sundquist, U.S.
Sens. Fred Thompson and Bill Frist and Congressman Zach Wamp.
WHAT:
Oak Ridge was the site of key research that helped the United States win
World War II and the
Cold War. The conference will explore how Oak Ridge and surrounding East
Tennessee can be a national
model for converting research expertise and facilities from the challenges of
war to the economic and
scientific challenges of the 21st Century. Mayor Roberts will participate in a
session that examines how
technology can be used to solve waste management and other challenges that face
local governments.
