The curriculum in the Oak Ridge schools provides much more than the minimum requirements of the State Board of Education:

- Preschool Program - A high-quality preschool program is available for children ages three through five and for students with special needs.

- Transition Classes - Selected students receive additional time and special instruction to help them reach the maturity level needed for the first grade.

- Special Programs in all Schools - Art, general music, and physical education are part of the total curriculum at all levels and are offered through trained and certified teachers.

- Orchestra and Band - This is offered in all schools. Students may begin a stringed instrument in fourth grade and a band instrument at the fifth-grade level.

- Computer Education - A computer laboratory containing between 14 and 20 computers is provided in each school. Every student in grades K-8 receives instruction on the computer. Elective courses are offered at the high school level.

- Summer Library Program - All elementary school libraries and one secondary library are open for a portion of each summer to encourage students to continue their reading.

- Sixth-Grade Environmental Program - An annual week-long experience is held in the Great Smoky Mountains for sixth-graders. Participants study the flora and fauna of the Smokies as well as stream ecology. In addition, students have an opportunity to learn about the early settlers of the park.

- Ecology - This program is field-based and offered for selected junior high school participants on weekends during the school year as well as during the summer. Participants study the interrelationships of plants, animals, and the environment.

- Wilderness Program for Secondary Students - A program patterned after the nationally known Outward Bound Program and designed for selected secondary students who wish to test their mental, physical, and emotional abilities in a rugged outdoor environment.

- Advanced Placement Courses - More than 20 courses offering college-level credit are available at the high school, including second year college calculus. Students may save as much as one full year of college tuition. Junior high students may also take some high school-level courses.

- Technology-Career Program - Approximately 40 technology-career courses are offered to students pursuing either post-high school employment or advanced training. Recent changes in the Technology-Career Programs have been made by a committee of staff, business, and industry representatives. These changes have updated the programs to better reflect the needs of students who will graduate during the next several years.

- Youth Leadership Development - Community Involvement Program - A program for eleventh and twelfth grades designed to develop student civic awareness, responsibility, and leadership through projects beneficial to the community.

Parents and interested citizens assist with vision testing, field trips, parties, fund-raising events, etc. They also provide much needed help in the libraries and the computer laboratories.

- Wednesday Early Dismissal - Early dismissal on Wednesday provides planning time for staff and opportunities for students and their families to engage in special activities.

- Instructional Aides - More than 70 teacher aides are deployed throughout the schools to help with the instructional program.
