Come Celebrate Oak Ridge's 50th Birthday

OAK RIDGE AT A GLANCE...

The City of Oak Ridge was created in 1942 for a single purpose--secret production of the atomic bomb for World War II. However, with the end of the war came a new beginning for Oak Ridge. The "secret city" quickly became one of the world's foremost centers of research and development and the advanced applications of high technology. This community born of war has become a city thriving withlife, beauty, culture and opportunity.

Oak Ridge lies in an Eastern Tennessee valley between the Cumberland Mountains and southern Appalachians. Covering 92 square miles, the city sits on the border of Anderson and Roane counties. Atlanta, Nashville, Chattanooga, Louisville, Lexington, and Asheville are within 200 miles by interstate highways 40, 75 and 81. Knoxville, Tennessee's third largest city, is 17 miles to the southeast.
