The Health Sciences Research Division (HSRD), the Geographics Information Systems and the Computational Physics and Engineering Division (CPED) at ORNL are using digital medical imaging to compute exposure to internal and external photon sources. ORNL is researching and developing improved dosimetry computation techniques by combining mathematical phantom techniques with the CT, Magnetic Resonance Imagery (MRI), and cryosection imagery available from the Visible Human Project, sponsored by the National Library of Medicine. ORNL is undertaking a venture to utilize the imagery data from the Visible Human Project for many kinds of research including dosimetry, medical image telemedicine, and anatomic studies. Collaborations are being explored with East Tennessee State University, (ETSU) James H. Quillen College of Medicine and the VA Medical Center to support research, using the Visible Human data.
